The modern version of croquet emerged in Ireland during the 1830s, where it was initially played as a pastime by the landed gentry. From there, it spread to England, becoming a favourite recreational activity among the Victorian upper class. Croquet lawns became common features of grand estates, and the game was embraced as a social pastime, enjoyed by both men and women.
In 1868, the All England Croquet Club was formed, later evolving into the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, famous for hosting the Wimbledon Championships. The standardisation of rules occurred during this period, contributing to croquet's growing popularity and ensuring consistency in gameplay.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, croquet experienced a surge in popularity in America as well, particularly in the northeastern states. It became a fashionable leisure activity, with clubs and tournaments proliferating across the country.

One of the most iconic references is found in Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." In the story, the Queen of Hearts famously plays a game of croquet using live flamingos as mallets and hedgehogs as balls, showcasing the whimsical and surreal nature of both the game and the book.
Additionally, croquet has appeared in numerous films, television shows and works of literature, often symbolising leisure, elegance, or the eccentricities of the upper class.
